Wheaton Warrenville South High School alumnus and star athlete Declin Ermer was lauded for his charisma and ability to save lives.
Ermer, a student at the University of Montana, died earlier this month after falling off a terrace and into the sidewalk below.
“It could happen to anybody, but you always believe it will be somebody else,” Eric Ermer, his father, said.
Everyone who knew him has been deeply affected by his loss. People from all across the world have reached out to his loved ones to tell their own personal stories.
“People all around the country have given us stories of his kindness we didn’t know about,” said his mother, Laura Townsend.
At Wheaton Warrenville South High School, where he attended, Ermer was a three-sport star.
“He had so many individuals he affected in all three sports,” said Wheaton Warrenville South’s athletic director, Mike Healy. To paraphrase, “He was a really nice child.”
His peers praised him as a fantastic team player. Against Wheaton North, a tough team, he held his own defensively and took three charges, doing the gritty labor that helped his side win. His legacy will include his selflessness. Ermer’s organs were donated per his family’s decision.
With the help of tissues and other supplies, “seven people’s lives were saved or improved,” his father claimed.
“He will remain in that there forever. In my eyes, he’s a divine being. A legacy will be established for him, “mommy told him.
On Sunday afternoon, many of Ermer’s classmates and friends from Wheaton Warrenville South will gather to remember him. More than 500 individuals are expected, in fact.
